Speaker Bios and Workshops
Abeer Kayani
Abeer Kayani is an award-winning Textile designer-maker specialising in hand-dyed and screen-printed textiles, working with local communities focused on representation inclusivity and visibility. She challenges traditional printing techniques by experimenting with delicate designs, using bold colours and layering techniques to craft unique silk scarves and textile wall hangings. Through her practice she processes her thoughts on belonging, sense of identity and representation. Coming from Pakistan, a country with a rich cultural background, Abeer recreates her cultural experiences through wearable and decorative art pieces.
Abeer enjoys working on meaningful projects that bring out stories expressing the relationships that humans form with places and objects. Her collection takes objects and moments of sentimental significance, translating them into functional art pieces. She received the Craft Skills Award in 2021 for her exceptional products and has been recognised by Society of Dyers and Colourists for quality craftmanship and use of colour.
Abeer’s products have been bought by collectors and craft enthusiasts across UK, stocked with Liberty of London in collaboration with the Crafts Council and other prestigious galleries such as New Ashgate Gallery, Southampton City Art Gallery, Solent Showcase Gallery, Craft Festival. She is a member Design Nation, Crafts Council Directory, CHAOS Network and Anytime Artisan. She was offered an Artist Residency at the Watts Gallery and was invited to guest speak at the Westminster Media Forum for Arts Council England. Based in Southampton and currently working towards growing her practice, she continues to develop her networks and new relationships.
Workshop Outline
Join Textile Artist and colourist Abeer Kayani for a hands-on block-printing experience using geometric patterns from architectural structures from the South Asian and Persian empires. Under Abeer's guidance you will print, evaluate and experiment with blocks using ink on cotton. The Artist will share examples of her textile pieces, incorporating line, shape and forms found in Islamic Geometric Art. This session offers a unique opportunity to work with Abeer, as she guides you through the entire process, from preparing your cloth to creating your patterns and compositions. The outcomes can be framed, sewn into a cushion or stretched in a canvas. The session will end a group critique and feedback session.
