"The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance."
Aristotle
Aims
The objective of the art toolkit is to provide you with guidance to support you in leading and teaching art in your primary school.
The vision for primary art in Hampshire and beyond, is for all children to have a high quality art education to:
- enable individual creativity with an art, craft and design education that will unlock pupils’ distinct imagination and expression
- gain visual literacy and communication skills, together with imagination and personal expression about the material and virtual worlds
- develop a wide range of art and design techniques and skills including drawing, painting, sculpture, collage, printing, textiles and art and digital media.
- gain an understanding of the visual elements of colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space and their application
- have a practical, experiential knowledge of art disciplines and processes through experimentation and investigation
- be equipped to talk, write, and make in art and develop critical, creative, and analytical thinking skills about their own artwork to include problem solving and risk taking
- empower pupils to experiment, invent and create their own works of art with increasing proficiency in their execution
- enable reflection and appreciation of the world of art, to nurture pupils to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding about the work of artists, architects, and designers, across periods, styles and movements in the history of art
- be able to analyse their own work, and that of others, to increase the ability to express reasoned judgements and decisions that can inform and strengthen the visual impact and applications of their own work
- appreciate the steps of a learning journey in art and how this can shape a project
- enable children to be curious, inquisitive and to enjoy and have fun learning in and through art.
What is art, craft and design?
The National Curriculum consists of the combination of art, craft, and design. These disciplines act to define and promote visual literacy. They are three separate entities each with their own characteristics.
